'Therapist into Coach'
by Julia Vaughan Smith

Open University Press was given a very positive review in Therapy Today.

Team Coaching

We take all the elements of one to one Executive Coaching into working with teams. When we do that we focus on:

The primary task or commission of the team - what they are there to deliver/achieve
The team roles and internal relational dynamics to enable the team to be able to be creative, innovative and           deliver on their tasks
Learning from action, reflection and analysis of assumptions, thought patterns and ways of relating with                     external parties
Releasing the full potential within the team

As for individual coaching, the agenda is set by the team and we encourage the team to seek and use feedback from key external parties as well as to use relevant personality instruments to develop understanding of difference and strength within the team.

We would tend to work with teams in this way on a monthly basis over a period of around 6 months; we may join team meetings and coach the team during the meeting and/or meet with them for specific team coaching sessions.

At times our team coaching can be more like team supervision, if that is what the team requires. That is focusing much more on the internal dynamics which are affecting the relationships and processing issues which have had a negative effect on the relationships.

Teams may ask us to work with them if:
They are a new team and want to enhance the rate of learning about how to effective together and to use the            full potential within the team
They have had a number of membership or role changes
There have been some disruptive dynamics in the team, for example, losses of key members or some trauma            affecting the team
Are going through a change or transition in their work or their place in the wider system
They want to improve their performance and system-wide impact.

'Close' Learning

This is closely aligned with team coaching, and offers something in addition; the input of knowledge which is relevant to the team task/commissioning and the focus on leadership within the team and by the team within the wider system.

It is 'close learning' as it happens very close to the work of the team often a clinical team engaged in service innovation, and will involve contact with the team coach in a variety of different ways aimed to build up leadership and innovation effectiveness.
